As is the case with many graphics industry applications, most consumers are unaware that the design catching their eye is actually a pressure-sensitive solution. And, window-etched glass décor films are no different. However, once this best kept industry secret is discovered, an entire world of artistic interior décor is opened. Artificial sandblasting has been around for centuries and was first patented in 1870. Historically, the silica dust produced from the sand caused severe health problems after sustained inhalation so as the sandblasting process evolved other materials such as garnet, metal pellets and glass beads were used as a replacement to sand.
When performed on a glass surface, sandblasting creates a unique frosted look. A unique frosted look easily matched with pressure-sensitive vinyl—for much less the cost.
MACtac, a global supplier of pressure-sensitive adhesives, produces one of the most popular vinyl series to resemble actual sandblasting, frosting or etching in the industry. MACmark Glass Décor 700 is a polymeric translucent, high-performance indoor and outdoor film with dusted or frosted finishes, ideal for producing decoration of windows, doors, mirrors and other glass décor for an etched, frosted, or sandblasted effect. Glass décor vinyl presents a variety of unique effects and creates an extended range of decorative possibilities, adding dimension and style to any piece of glass.
A must-have in the product line-up of Alberto Muñoz, a graphics artist and owner of Vizcaya Communication, a MACtac customer in Durango, Mexico, the Glass Décor 700 series is a favorite. Muñoz specializes in residential window-etching applications and generally tries to craft an artistic connection between the natural exterior and interior. He has had great success with MACtac products noting that at times, his customers will leave the etched vinyl artwork on for a decade or longer.
"Glass décor is only one sector of my business, which also includes signmaking for large-scale outdoor advertising, but it is one of the most enjoyable. MACtac's frosted and dusted window-etching materials are possibly the best I've ever used," Muñoz said. "The films are easy to cut, have good dimensional stability and are fairly forgiving compared to similar products on the market. They are permanent, adhere well and adhere quickly—so I'm pleasing my customer and getting the most return on investment, which is very satisfying."
